How to Maintain Your Balayage

Beautiful balayage deserves beautiful aftercare. The right maintenance routine keeps your colour vibrant, your tones fresh and your hair healthy between salon visits. Our Italian-trained colourists at GA Salons share their expert tips for making your balayage last longer and look better — from washing techniques to toning schedules.

Essential Balayage Aftercare Tips

Balayage is low-maintenance by design — but a few smart habits will keep it looking salon-fresh for weeks longer. Follow this guide from our colourists.

Washing Routine

Wait 48 hours after your balayage before the first wash. Use lukewarm (never hot) water and limit washing to 2–3 times per week. Overwashing strips colour faster. When you do wash, use a sulphate-free, colour-safe shampoo — we recommend Oway's colour protection range.

Products to Use & Avoid

Use sulphate-free shampoo, colour-protecting conditioner and a weekly deep conditioning mask. Avoid clarifying shampoos, products with alcohol or heavy silicones. Purple or blue toning shampoo once a week helps prevent brassiness — but don't overuse it or your colour can shift.

Heat Protection Is Non-Negotiable

Always use a heat protectant before blow-drying, straightening or curling. Heat opens the cuticle and accelerates colour fade. Keep your dryer on medium heat and your straighteners below 185°C. Air-drying is the kindest option for colour longevity.

When to Rebook: Toner vs Full Refresh

Book a toner refresh at 6–8 weeks to keep your tones bright and brassy-free. A full balayage refresh is typically needed every 12–16 weeks, depending on your growth rate and desired look. Your colourist at GA will create a personalised maintenance calendar.

Balayage Maintenance Services at GA Salons

Toner Refresh

A quick gloss or toner application to revive your balayage tones and neutralise any brassiness. Takes 30–45 minutes and extends the life of your balayage by weeks. Recommended every 6–8 weeks.

Balayage Touch-Up

A targeted balayage refresh on new growth and face-framing sections. Maintains your look without a full re-application. Ideal for clients who want to extend time between full appointments.

Full Balayage Refresh

A complete balayage application for clients ready for a full colour refresh. Your colourist reassesses placement and tone to keep your balayage evolving beautifully.

Deep Conditioning Treatment

An intensive conditioning treatment to restore moisture, shine and strength to colour-treated hair. Can be added to any appointment. Keeps balayaged hair feeling as good as it looks.
