Anyone with curly hair can attest to the fact that taming curly hair can be a challenge. It can take a lot of failed attempts before finding the right products and hair care routine. Curly hair can be difficult to tame daily and not to mention, keeping dryness away can also be a battle. There are a few tips and tricks we have learned over the years of hairstyling, from products to tools and techniques. Continue below to see our 5 helpful tips you should keep in mind.
Brush hair when wet
Hair is more brittle when in a dry state so you will want to avoid brushing our hair when dry at all costs. You may have noticed when dry brushing, hair seems to look even frizzier. Not only does this leave your hair looking like a frizzy disaster, but it can also lead your hair to develop split ends. If you need to brush your hair only do so when it is wet. If you are in a rush, use a water spray with a small amount of conditioner and sprits over your hair before detangling. This will help the brush glide effortlessly over your strands and prevent hair from snagging at the ends.
Ditch the small teeth combs
Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle your hair. Due to their large teeth that are spaced apart, they are useful in removing tangles without pulling excessively on your hair. It is best to avoid combs with smaller teeth as your hair will get caught in between the teeth and cause breakage.
Sleep on satin or silk
Caring for your hair shouldn’t stop while sleeping. In fact, sleeping on a cotton pillow is a common cause for hair to break or cause spilt ends. It’s especially damaging for those with curlier type hair as the cotton material absorb all the moisture from your hair. Silk and satin pillows provide a smooth surface for your hair to glide on. They cause less friction on your hair compared to cotton pillows.
Use a diffuser
Use a diffuser to dry your hair and to add volume. A diffuser will disperse hot air from a larger surface area and help to dry hair faster. This method will help to minimise frizz as the hair dries. Don’t forget to use a cream-based heat protectant before picking up the hot tool. Use at a medium heat level to prevent heat damage.
Don’t over wash
Shampooing curly hair too often can leave your strands feeling dry and brittle. A small amount of natural oils are needed to keep curls protected and looking their best. We suggest washing hair no more than 3 times a week. Stretch out your wash days using dry shampoos or style hair that keep your ends protected.
